(William) Henry KIRBY, b May 2, 1805 NC, &
  1)  m 8 Nov 1832 Elizabeth L. (?) KIRBY, b 11 Mar 1816.
  2) m 17 Jun 1841 July/Julia Ann (WOOD) KIRBY, b May 1, 1821 TN.
  3)  m 9 Aug 1870 Mary E. (?) KIRBY, b 6 Apr 1828.

Late in 1996, Mrs. Virginia Frost sent me some information which she was
so kind as to copy from books and records in the library and courthouse
in Camden, AR.  Must have been about a year before I read the
information.   Part of those records included:

Kirby Cemetery
- Turn left at top of hill, highway 24, before getting to Chidester, AR
on past Pleasant Hill High School about a mile to land of Eugene Gulley,
on which lives Georgia Sockwell - about 1/4 mile back of house in woods
at a large cedar tree.

Also, included on a separate page was:

KIRBY FAMILY CEMETERY
Butler, Adam Sept. 23, 1815 Sept. 24, 1867
Kirby, Henry May 2, 1805 Aug 28, 1888
Kirby, Julia Ann May 1, 1821 Oct. 12, 1869
Kirby, Georgia Ann June 10, 1865 Oct. 12, 1871
No other graves apparent.  This cemetery is not fenced and is grown up
with bushes and small trees.
- ----------------------------

Later correspondence with Mrs. Frost confirmed that the cemetery is still
in extremely bad shape.

Just recently, I received the following e-mail from Mr. Jesse Wood:

From: Jesse Wood <jwood@cei.net>
To: Tim.Carter@juno.com

I live in Chidester, Arkansas and am familiar with the Kirby Cemetery.
It's no longer in use and is grown over by woods. I knew Mr. Henry Kirby
and his wife, he worked as a clerk in the Chidester Mercantile Store when
I was a child. They were also members of the Chidester Baptist Church of
which I am a member.

GRANVILLE G. KIRBY was born 14 December 1853 in North Carolina and died in Dallas County, Texas, 14 September 1927.  He married Nellie Jane Heath 24 December 1885 in Arlington, Tarrent County, Texas.

I am looking, and have been looking for many years, for a North Carolina census record of a Kirby family with a son named Granville born in 1853. This should identify the correct Kirby family.  Maybe an old will or some court records might help identify his family.  He named his two
sons, Jesse Granville Kirby and Earl Junius Kirby.

Granville Kirby had no past, and I have spent well over twenty-five years  looking for his parents in North Carolina. His daughter, my mother-in-law who died in 1995 at the age of 96,  said he never spoke of a family or kin other than to say he was the youngest of fourteen children, and that it wasn't safe to go home. His wife, Nellie Jane Heath Kirby lived with my wife and I and died in 1962 also at the age of 96.  Before her death I talked with her many hours about the early days in Texas.  She divorced Granville in 1914 and often told me that she knew nothing of his past, but believed that he came from the area around Raleigh, North Carolina.  She also spoke of his being the youngest of a
large family.  Granville worked for the railroad for many years and was working for the railroad when he married Nellie.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on my 3rd ggf, Bailey Kerby, born 26 Mar 1799 in Burke County, NC.  He married Elizabeth Sherrill (born 11 Oct 1799 in Burke County) there in 1818.  They moved to Rabun County, GA before 1850.   Both died in Towns County, GA in 1874.  I am particularly
interesed in the identity of his parents.  I have been told -- but have been unable to prove -- that he was a descendant of Thomas Kerby, an English emigrant who died in York County, VA in 1688.

Ron Fletcher ronfletch@juno.com

Pat, my ancestor is the Henry Kirby who left a will in Stokes Co., NC in
1790.  I do not believe he is the son of John Kirby of Pittsylvania Co., VA.
Francis Kirby was born in 1774 and he is the son of Edmund Kirby who is the
son of the Henry Kirby who died in Stokes.  I estimate that Edmund was born
around 1750 and Henry around 1729/30.  Also, the Henry Kirby involved in
land deeds in Pittsylvania with John Kirby had a wife named Ann and he used
an "H" as his mark.  The Henry Kirby who died in Stokes had a wife named
Susannah and he used an "X" or a "+" (I have seen both marks used in the
same transaction) as his mark.

Since there are so many Henry, Jesse, Samuel, and Pleasant  Kirbys, I have
been wondering if the follow hypothesis might account for so many similar
naming patterns:

Hypothesis:  Could the following be brothers?
1.  John Kerby of Pittsylvania and
2.  The father of Henry Kerby who died in Stokes and
3.  The father of Richard Kerby and Henry Baker Kirby.

The Kerbys you found in the 1790 census for
Stokes Co., NC (Edmund, Jesse, Pleasant, and Samuel) all were sons of Henry
Kirby who left a will in 1790 in Stokes Co.  I believe your birthdate for
Pleasant (about 1767) is correct.  After his father, Henry Kerby, died,
Pleasant and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hollaman moved to Smith Co., TN and
then to Jackson Co., TN.  Pleasant died about 1819/20.

Edmund (my ancestor) was born about 1750 and was in Stokes until at least
1794 and then I lose him.  I believe he died about December 1828 in Morgan
Co., GA where two of his sons were living.  I found a notice in the George
Journal (Milledgeville) Newspaper dated 31 Jan 1829 where Edmund's son Henry
(what other name would you expect?) "applies for letters of administration
on the estate of Edmond Kirby, late of said county, deceased.)
After much
searching, I have not found any court records regarding this.

Jesse Kerby stayed in Stokes County.  I estimate Jesse's birth at around
1763.  He must have died around 1816.  His wife, Elizabeth D. East, remains
on the Stokes Co., NC census until 1830 and she died around 1836.

Samuel Kerby
is a little "iffy."  I think he was born around 1755.   There is
a deed dated 1783 in Surry Co., NC where a Samuel Kerby and wife, Mexuelvey,
sold land.  Samuel is on the Stokes Co., NC census for 1790 living next to
his brother, Pleasant.  The last time I find him is witnessing three deeds
in Stokes Co. in 1796.

Larry, I also had noticed another Henry and Susannah Kerby in Pittsylvania.
They apparently stayed in Pittsylvania until at least 1805 when they sold
some land.  This Henry Kerby could sign his name and his wife used an "X" as
her mark.  I agree with you that John and Jemima are and important part of
this puzzle.  The Kerbys who moved to Union Co., SC, all had "The Names."
Do you know anything about the will of the Henry Kerby who died in
Rutherford Co., TN?  I have heard about it, but know nothing of the
contents.  Do you know anything about Hanover Henry Kerby?

Evea, Larry, and Leo, here is some of what I think I know about  some of the
family of the Henry Kerby who left a will in 1790 in Stokes Co., NC.  We
know the will names the following children:  Sarah Davis, Edmund Kerby,
Samuel Kerby, Lelia Williams, Dorcas Cunningham, Jesse Kerby, Pleasant
Kerby.

Edmund (my ancestor) and his wife, Sarah Shepherd,
had the following
children:  Jesse Kerby (b about 1773, d 1834), Francis Kirby (my ancestor)
(b 1774, d 1854), Henry Kirby (b 1776, d 1854 in Austin Co., TX), Sarah
Kirby
(b 1781, d ?) (married Joel Flanagan), James Kirby (b 1787, d 1843),
Patsy (Martha?) Kirby (b ca 1780/90, d ?) (married Henry J. Williams),
Edmund S. Kirby (b between 1790/94, d ?), John Kirby (b 1797, d 1851 in
Tuscaloosa Co., AL).  I did locate the grave of one of Edmund's sons, James
Kerby, who married Elizabeth Longino.  James is buried in the Sharp-Kirby
Cemetery in Silver Creek, Lawrence Co., MS.  His tombstone reads, "James /
son of / Edmund and Sarah / Shepherd Kirby / born / in Stokes Co. / North
Carolina / in 1787 / died / in Lawrence / County Mississippi / Sept 18 1843.
One note, I have not been able to confirm that Edmund's son, Edmund S.
(Shepherd?) Kirby, married Elizabeth Uptegrove and remained in North
Carolina.

Everything I have read, but with no proof, states that Henry's son, Edmund,
married Sarah Shepherd,
daughter of "Gen. William (D. or B.?) Shepperd, high
sheriff, commander of militia, from VA and NC..."  I have a transcript of a
manuscript written in 1916 by one of James' sons, Henry Shepherd Kirby (b.
1826 in Simpson Co., MS, died 1925 in Medina Co., TX).  Henry Shepherd Kirby
is the one who wrote the quote above about Gen. Shepperd.

Do you know anything else about this William Shepherd?  The only William
Shepherd I have found in the revolutionary records who attained any rank at
all was a Col. William Shepherd who was up for promotion to Gen. but  the
promotion didn't happened.  This William Shepherd was from Massachusetts.  I
hope that finding out more about William Shepherd will help us find more
information about Edmond and Henry.

There could be other Shepherd wives of other Kirbys, but, if not, perhaps
Pleasant Kirby named his son "Shepherd" after his brother Edmond's wife's
family.

Thanks, Shirley Joiner  join2@gvtc.com

On page 17 Samuel Kearby to Austin Kearby a tract of land on Defeated

There seems to be relationship between Austin, Samuel, William, James

There were some others mentioned being Franklin, Nathaniel, Jesse, Sarah

There were numerous Sloans also. I violated my own

Obedience (Beady) Sasser, daughter of Arthur Sasser of Johnston Co., N.C.,
married Charles Kirby.  Then they removed to Laurel Co., Ky. about 1835.  Does
anyone know when & where this marriage took place ?  I will appreciate any and
all help.

I am trying to locate a marriage between Obedience (Beady) Sasser and Charles
Kirby.

Arthur Sasser and wife Elizabeth.  Arthur died 1815 in Johnston Co., NC.  His
children according to his will were:
Josiah
Nancy
Edith...her will written in 1816
Sally
Elizabeth
Ceily
Fanny
Beady
The will has witness Thomas Kirby.  Henry Sasser Friend and Josiah Sasser,
son, are the executors.

I believe that Beady & Charles Kirby ended up in Laurel Co., Ky. along with
her brother Josiah Sasser about 1835-38.  Josiah's daughter Isabella Sasser
married a Thomas Kirby there in 1843.   Can anyone tell me where I might find
the marriage of Beady & Charles or shed any light on Josiah Sasser.  Thank you
so much for any help you can offer.    Patsy

Like many of you I have not found a clue among all the messages I have
read on the parents or family of GRANVILLE G. KIRBY, born 14 Dec. 1853
in North Carolina and died 14 Sept 1927 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas.
Granville married Nellie Jane Heath 24 Dec 1885 in Arlington, Tarrant
County, Texas.  She was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Heath and Julie
Ann Thomas.

GRANVILLE G. KIRBY had no past and the only clue to any family was a
single letter written over a hundred years ago saying it was safe to
come home.  The letter was lost and no one could remember where it came
from or who wrote it.  His daughter, was my mother-in-law and she died
in 1995 at the age of 96.  She knew nothing of any family or her father
and she told me many time that she never heard him speak of any family
other than to say he was born in North Carolina and was the youngest of
a maybe fourteen children.

Surely Granville's name appears on a census.  Certainly on the 1860 and
1870 census, probably North Carolina, and probably in the Raleigh, North
Carolina area.  I have looked at census records of North Carolina and
either overlooked his name or it is not there.  If anyone has a 1860 or
1870 census record containing the name Granville, or even G. G.
Kirby/Kerby, I sure could use some help.

I promised my mother-in-law for many years that I would find out who her
father's family was.  I failed her.  Her daughter, my wife, died in 1983
and her only two Kirby cousins have since died.  There are few if any
descendants that have an interest, but I still would like to know
something of this man without a past.

Hello, I am posting one of my Kirby lines to the List:

Source of this information is the Will of James Kirby written 20 Jan 1800
and proved Feb 1816, Chatham County, North Carolina:

James KIRBY d. 1816 Chatham Co, NC
    m. Elizabeth _______

Children:

Wiley KIRBY
Wright KIRBY
Isaac KIRBY
Sarah KIRBY
James KIRBY
Anne KIRBY
*Rebecca KIRBY b. abt 1780 NC
    m. *James Jones abt 1800 NC
Nancy KIRBY
Emily (or Cindy) KIRBY.

*my ancestors

Note:  the birth order of these children may be wrong.  The Will lists them
so that it's hard to tell exactly who is older than who.   Wiley is probably
the oldest boy - he inherits more property.  But Wright and Isaac are named
executors so they may be next oldest.

I would like to hear from any who are related to this line or who may have
more information.
