Have a request of anybody who might have information on a Timothy Kirby.
Timothy is believed to have been born between 1770-75 somewhere in the State
of New Jersey.  The state of origin was obtained from the 1880 Federal
census in which his son had specified his father's place of birth. Timothy
was originally found in Rome, Oneida Co., N.Y.  about 1801-02 while in the
process of migrating west along the Mohawk River.  Anybody with information
can e-mail McKirby@terragon.com

Thanks to
information provided by Adrianne and supported by other independent sources
we show Timothy to have been a participant in the War of 1812.  Thank you.

I recently discovered my ancestor's will (Thomas KIRBY, d.1820, Upper
Freehold, Monmouth, NJ) in which is mentioned a prior land purchase; I
quote: 'which I purchased of Robert MONTGOMERY, heir at law to the real
estate of William BURNET dec'd by deed dated the first day of May... 1801
(except so much of the said tract of land as hath since been conveyed by me
to William MOUNT of the township, county and State aforesaid) a more
particular description of the said tract of land will appear by a reference
to the said deed of conveyance.

does anyone, searching MOUNT, MONTGOMERY or BURNET have any names that
might match here? I'm willing & able to track down the deed (unless, of
course, another kind rooter already has, and is willing to share...)

the will was signed, witnessed, etc. 16 July 1813; witnesses include Peter
& Mary BILYEU (is this a clue to Thomas' wife's family?) and Caleb LLOYD
was surrogate.

any clues for me out there? thanks, all!

Hello folks,

Since this is my first posting, let me begin by introducing myself.  I am a
52 year old retired Bank Executive and I live in Midlothian, VA, along with
my wife Pam, and our 24 year old daughter, Carrie.

I have been a "lurker" on this list for many months, but I have responded
to several postings where I thought that I could be of assistance (as
recently as this morning) - so some of you know me.

Both Pam and I are very experienced researchers - we are most often
referred to as "Archive Rats" by our families.<grin>   I come by this
"honestly" as my mother is a professional genealogist.  Although we live in
VA, both Pam's and my family lines are primarily NJ/NY/N.E. and our
research is "complete" on the vast majority of these.  We have a very large
library of NJ/NY genealogical material (some pretty "rare") which we share
as needed.  I am also listed as a "Resource" on another of the Rootsweb
Lists and correspond very frequently with members of that list.

All that said (probably much more than needed - sorry!), here is the reason
for my posting.  We have been researching this Sarah Kirby (see below) for
MANY years, but have been unable to "prove" her parents from Wills, deeds,
etc., etc.  She is a valid "brick-wall".  She is direct line, my wife's
GGGG Grandmother.

I should mention that we have the likely candidates for her parentage
identified, i.e. William and Marey (Mariah) Britton Kirby of Upper
Freehold, NJ.    William's will (1805, Nov 7 - filed as 8682M in the NJ
Archives) mentions his wife, but does not name her (but does identify her
father by name).  It also mentions several children, including, of course,
a daughter, "Sarah" who was show as under 21 years of age at the time the
will was written.  The date certainly fits.  The location fits (Allentown
was "Upper Freehold" during this period).  Other Sarah Kirbys whom we have
placed in this area have been excluded, by dates or other factual
information, but we of course do not know if we have identified all of
them.

I have a copy of the original  "Monmouth County 1790 Freeholders List".   It
lists (consecutively): Thomas, William, and Robert Kirby, (all of Upper
Freehold) - none others listed.  I know that this particular document does
NOT necessarily indicate that these were the only Kirbys in Monmouth County
at the time.

Sarah's dates, marriage, and children are found in three independent early
Hunt/Hutchinson Family Bible Records (plus several other sources), one in
possession of my wife's family and two in the GSNJ collection.  Dates in
the Bible records conform to the tombstone inscription shown (and twice
referenced) below.  Her husband's will offers no assistance. Sarah was the
first of three wives and is obviously not mentioned.   No marriage
bond/record, or Church record has been located. The children listed are all
absolutely proved.  My wife comes through Ann.

I refer to Sarah's burial place as "Allentown Episcopal Churchyard" which
is what it is commonly called today.  It was not such in 1810 when Sarah
was buried there and the Episcopal Archives have no record of her.

Our policy is to not develop a "proof" based on the "preponderance of
evidence".  So we have been, and remain, stuck with good old Sarah.<groan>

In any event, this should identify her (complete references are available):
----------
Name:   Sarah Kirby
Birth Date:     1 Oct 1787
Death Date:     5 Nov 1810
Burial Place:   Allentown Episcopal Churchyard, Allentown, New Jersey
Spouse: Joseph Hunt Jr.
Marriage Date:  22 Nov 1803
Children:       William
        Mary
        Ann
        Joseph
Notes: <abbreviated for this posting>

Stillwell, Historical and Genealogical Miscellany Volume II, page 341 -
Burying Grounds of Monmouth County, New Jersey.  ("In an old Burying
Ground, Allentown, New Jersey"):

"In the rear of Nelson & Co.'s store, on the Wilson Wright property, at
Allentown, New Jersey are the following inscriptions:
....<snip>............Sarah, wife of Joseph Hunt, Jr., died, November 5,
1810, aged 23 years, 1 month, and 4 days......."

This cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Monmouth County, New
Jersey.  It is being maintained by the local Historical Society.  Very few
of the tombstones are presently readible (1997), and we have not been able
to locate and photograph Sara's actual grave site.  The cemetery was later
known as the Allentown Episcopal Churchyard.  No other Kirbys are buried
here, based on current information which may not be complete.

Genealogical Society of New Jersey Tombstone Inscription Records indicate
the following:
"Hunt, Joseph Junr.
Monmouth County
married Sarah
died (Sarah) 5 November 1810
aged 23 years 1 month 4 days
buried Allentown Episcopal Churchyard"
-----------

Can anyone help??!!   Any and all assistance, suggestions, etc. would be
appreciated, including info on other Sarah Kirbys in this immediate area
during this time period. (and yes, I know that "Sarah" was a common name in
many totally unrelated Kirby lines)<grin>.  Information disproving William
and Marey (Mariah) Britton Kirby as her parents would be welcomed, but
probably bring my wife to tears.

If anyone is stuck on a Hunt Family line in either NJ or NY, feel free to
write to me.  I almost guaranty that I can place your ancestor, or point
you in the right direction. If other than NJ/NY, see us over on the "Hunt
List".

I can assist with Kirby Will requests NJ: (1670-1900), or NY (1708-1728,
1744-1800, plus unrecorded wills prior to 1790).  NY series will be
complete in about a month - I lent out a few temporarily.  Please be
reasonable in any such requests.  Xerox copies cannot be provided at this
time, and Kirby surname only, please.

I can provide "Windows -.bmp" or Mac equivalent ".jpg", "TIFF", etc.,
copies if the person making the request is familiar with how to handle them
and has the necessary applications installed.  File lengths are typically
about 400k, so make certain that your mail server can handle this size
attachment.

NO "professional" type/extent research requests are being solicited, nor
will they be accepted, regardless of the circumstances. (didn't mean to
sound so harsh in this, but wanted this to be clear)

Thanks VERY much in advance,

John

It appears that Recompense Kirby, b. 1644, was the first of this line to move to Newton, Burlington, New Jersey from Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusettes.  Recompense and his wife, Rebecca Allen, b. August 02,
1668, had 4 children who were all born in Dartmouth, Massachusettes. I'm assuming Recompense moved his family from Dartmouth to Hanover, Burlington, New Jersey because he died there.

One of their sons, Richard, b. abt. 1694, married Anne Cheshire, b. abt.1694, around 1714 and raised their family of 8 children in Hanover, Burlington, New Jersey.  One of those 8 children was Joseph (see above),who later married Anne Emley and they had at least 10 children.
