my Great Grandfather, John KIRBY. I have very little to

go on. My Grandmother, Viola Mae KIRBY, was born in Dallas, TX. in May

1897. She would never talk about her past or her family except to say

where & when she was born, & that she was raised up in an orphanage in

Louisiana. I just recently found her parents names by obtaining my

Grandmother's SS-5 form which listed their names : John Kirby & Alice

CRENSHAW. I have no point of reference for them than this. I do not know

where they might have been before Dallas, if there were other children, or

what lead to my grandmother being in an orphanage. I would be most

grateful is someone could help me over, under, or around this brick wall.

Thanks

Looking for some information on George M. Kerby.     He married Sarah A.
Burke in Collin County, Texas, in 1869.

George M. Kerby b. May 1840 KY d. before 1910 in TX
    m. 2 Sep 1869 Collin Co, TX, Sarah A. Burke, dau of James Madison Burke
    & Sarah Deming

Children of George & Sarah:

John"James" T Kerby b. Nov 1870 TX
Nathan Kerby b. 1872 TX
Adie Kerby b. 1875 TX (female)
Lee Elbert Kerby b. Feb 1881 TX

Sources of information:  Census of 1880 & 1900 for Denton Co, TX; Marriage
records for Collin Co, TX; Obituary for Joseph Burke, brother of Sarah,
saying he is survived by a sister "Mrs. Kirby" of Gainesville, TX.  This was
in 1923.

Note:  The 1st son is "John" T. Kerby on the 1880 census and "James" T.
Kerby on the 1900 census.   He evidently got married but his wife died early
in their marriage.   John "James" is with his father in 1900 & listed as
"widowed" and there's 2 yr old George N. Kerby living with the family who is
obviously John's son.

Hope to hear from anyone researching this same family.

Unknown child’s grave.

Unknown adult’s grave.

I descend from the Henry KERBY whose will was probated in Stokes Co., NC in
1790.  My line goes through Henry's son Edmund.  Edmund reportedly married
Sarah SHEPPARD around 1772.  The children of Edmund and Sarah were:  Jesse,
Francis, Edmund S., Henry, Sarah, James, Martha (Patsy), and John.  Edmund
and most of his eight children moved to Georgia around 1806.  My line comes
down through Edmund's son Francis.

However, the information I am submitting is about Edmund's son Henry who
moved from GA around 1843, stopped in AL around 1844, and was in TX by 1850.
These KIRBYs are buried in Salem Cemetery, Waller Co., Texas:

Unknown child’s grave.

Unknown adult’s grave.
Glenn, no, I have not heard of a J.A.J. Kirby in Waller Co., TX.  Do you
have any more information on him?  You asked for a list of Henry Kirby's
children.  I don't know all of them.  He had a son named Jared Ellison Kirby
who was born in 1809 and died in 1865; a son (name unknown) born about 1810,
a daughter named Lucinda who was born between 1810-1815, and a daughter
named Elisabeth S. who was born in 1815 and died in 1857.  There may have
been others.

Henry's son, Jared, was named for Jared Ellison Groce.  Connections between
the Kirby and Groce families go back to 1774 when Henry's grandfather, Henry
Kerby (would you expect a Kirby to have any other name?), witnessed a deed
in Halifax Co., VA, with Jared Ellison Groce, Sr.  Jared Ellison Groce, Jr.
was one of Moses Austin's original group of 500 settlers to Texas.  Henry
Kerby (the younger) married Sarah Harper, a grand-daughter of Jared Ellison
Groce, Sr.

Jared Ellison Kirby and Leonard Groce (son of Jared Ellison Groce, Jr.)
became the two largest plantation owners in Austin Co. (now Waller Co.).
Jared Kirby married three times, losing his first two wives shortly
following childbirth.  When Jared Ellison Kirby was tragically killed in
1865 following the Civil War, his widow was unable to keep the plantation
(called "Alta Vista") going and sold the land to the State of Texas which
later used the land to build Prarie View A&M University.  Between 1884 and
1919 Jared Ellison Kirby's widow, Helen Marr Swearengin Kirby, served as
"Lady Assistant" then as the first Dean of Women at the University of Texas.
Their son, Robert Harper Kirby, was a well-known philanthropist and
prohibitionist in Texas, serving as president of the "Anti-Saloon League of
Texas."

Shirley,  J.A.J. Kirby according to his Civil War Record was from Grimes
Co, which is adjoining Waller Co.  His family is on the 1850 Tx  cesus as
follows.:
Jesse Kirby   32  N.C
Susan  "        22  Ga.
Andrew J. "    5   Ga.
Thomas R. "   3    "
John          "          TX.

In Waller Co., the following lived:
Gared E. Kirby    31            Ga.
Jribleana (?)Kirby       21    "
Lucy     Kirby        3     Miss
Walter Rice (overseer) 40 Ga.
Soloman A. Rice 19 (tending stock) 19  Miss

The above info may help you.  As these Kirbys are not of my line, I did
not pursue any more about them.  I was interested in Andrew because he
owned land in the vicinity of my Kirbys in Lampasas Co for awhile.
