Greetings All,

Some further information about the book Betti Paull mentioned recently on the list, The Kirkby
Family of England, by Lewis Kirby.

The Library of Virginia has copies, which I believe can be borrowed though interlibrary loan.
It is a compilation from many different sources and contains unverified information about some
individuals.  Therefore, it cannot be sold.

It is possible, however, to obtain a copy by sending a donation towards the costs of
publication.  Donations can range from $40.00 and upward per copy, depending upon the

Discussions from the Kirby List...

I am no expert on Kirby history but I am of Montgomerys who have same background as Kirby's in Normandy and Denmark.  They settled first in England, made attempts at invading Ireland but mostly failed until Oliver Cromwell.  Then after 1640, Cromwell had Transportation laws, meaning a lot of Protestant English and Scots were set over to take
possession of the estates of Catholic lords.  This they did in Ulster. So they were not Irish but either Ulster Scots or Ulster English.  After awhile when English Kings wanted to get rid of religious dissidents, they shipped them off to Ulster. . .Presbyterians, Methodists, Quakers, etc.  We know that the Kirby's of New England left Warwickshire in 1635
to escape religious persecution.  So could be the same with the ones who came over from Ireland.  They went first to Ireland.  Not likely Irish but persecuted by Anglicans for not accepting the Church of England.

On Kirby's who were baptized in English Protestant Church in Holland.  He was a French Brandy distiller.  Again showing how they were persecuted and had to leave England. On book recommended by Glenn or someone, The Kirby's of
New England, there is a chapter on Kirby's family history.  I have not read this as yet but others have who are on-line.  I have copy of film now at local FHC.   Film source number is  1429854  Item 8, titled: The Kirby's of New England, by Melaliah E. Dwight. It states that the Kermis's were Danish (Vikings) who first settled in Normandy and invade England in 1066 A.D. with William the Conqueror. Lore?   Probably not as Genealogy was more important then.  However, once in England, many
people, lacking a surname would take on name of the nearest landowner since they did belong to that overlord at that time but may have not been related.

`I studied the Introduction for the Kirby's of New England, and I quote from bottom of Page 3 based upon word meanings:
"The name of Kirby is probably of Danish origins. It originally written Kirkby, from Kirke, meaning church, and bye, dwelling.  The earliest use of the word is found in the name of the shires of Deira, a part of ancient Northumbria.   The names of several towns in the north of England, vir. Kirkby Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirby Stephen, Etc. I did not find any evidence that they were Normans but it is not difficult to check that out as most of the followers of William the Conqueror are quite well known.  On of the earliest Baron of Kirkby Kenbdal in Westmoreland was Ivo Taillebois who came with William the Conquer, but
had no children so his title and estates were left to his brother, Gerard. In 1272, a John Kirkby was made Keeper of the Great Seal and afterwards the Bishop of Ely.  In 1322 Another John Kirkby, also written as Kirby, was created Bishop of Carlisle.  {It then names several families of Kirkbys and Kirbys scattled in various parts of England taken from original manuscripts kept in the British Museum.   In all the listing of names, they are of Norman origin.  Since names are always based upon family patterns, it leads to the conjecture that the families were Normans as the Anglo Saxons would never have named sons to honor
their enemies.  I am almost thru with John Kirby b. 1624 branch but will  need to split it up as it is too long to send all at once.

Pages 63 & 64 of the Kirbys of New England contain an amazing story --one to end all stories:
   46. Goerge6 Kirby>(Hezekiah, Joseph, John, Joseph, John1) born Feb 24, 1791, in Middletown, Upper houses. In 1814 he removed to Nichols, Tioga Co., New York, then a new settlement.  He was a shoemaker, tanner and labored industriously in his calling.  He married in 1812, Frances Potter born April 16, 1795, dau. of Job Potter of Alford, Mass.  The
following account of his marriage with Miss Potter was furnished by Mrs. Jennie H. Ryan of Denver, Col. A granddaughter of George Kirby's only sister, Lucretia.    "During a terrible New England snow storm, two or three coaches met at a farmhouse in the Biershire Hills where they were forced to stay until the storm abated.. . .For entertainment, the younger ones played games and had a merry time generally.   Someone suggested a mock marriage.  After some discussion they agreed to draw
lots to see who should participate.  The lots fell to George Kirby and Fanny Potter.   Then they looked for someone to play the part of the clergyman.  However, no one knew the ceremony.  Finally a seedy character showed up and offered to perform the service.  The couple was soon pronounced man and wife amidst shouts of laughter.   Soon as the storm subsided, the travelers proceeded on their way.   But to George and Frances's surprise, they learned the stranger was a magistrate who had performed a legal ceremony.  The father of the bride did everything trying to get the marriage set aside.  The was no such thing as divorce
in those days and the idea of it being done in "fun" was considered sinful.   So, it was written that they made the best of it and
consummated the marriage, living together for 52 years until George died.  Fanny had twelve children of whom nine survived. . . If it is not true it is some story.

As I understand it the Kirby line came from England originally, when they split in the U.S. some went to Pa., some to Va., Those in Va came to S.C. and some from there to Randolph County, Al.  That would be our line. Some migrated
from there to Texas early in this century.  They settled in the area around Ft. Hood and I got to meet some of them when we were out there when our son Bruce was stationed there. They have an interesting history and well known in
that area, and the museum there in Killeen has some to say of their history.  There was Ransom, son Wm. Terry Kirby, son John Daniel Kirby, son John Shellie Kirby, then my husband who is his oldest son.  I do wish we could get information beyond the
Ransom Kirby who must have lived the middle of the last century, but so far  nothing concrete.

.  The cousins in Texas were all from the Parmer Kirby line.  Parmer was one of the daughters of John Daniel Kirby who is my
husband's grandfather.  John Daniel Kirby had 3 wives and raised 2l children, three of whom (I think) were children of one of his wives before he married her.  The three daughters of Parmer Kirby Anderson were Maybelle, Sadie and
Berneice.  Berneice was the county nurse in whatever county Killeen is in. Met her briefly back in l969 I believe it was.  Maybelle was the oldest. There may have been another daughter and all but Maybelle are still living so
far as I know.  Understand these are my husband's cousins not from my side of the family.Parmer left Randolph County Al in a covered wagon and settled in That area of Texas.  There are many indications of their life there, in the museum, and what their lives were like. If you know anything of these cousins we would be happy to share what we know and have access to.

If anyone can supply that information we would be grateful. Keep in touch.   Thanks, Esther Kirby

Adrianne:  Hope this goes through. This is the assembled information I have

Henry KIRBY - See CA Families

I have a Joesph Kirby, b. July 17, 1656, m. Sarah Markham, b. 1657,on
November 10, 1681.  They had 8 children.  One was named Joseph, b. June
9, 1695.
There certainly could be some mix up here, because I also show that
Joseph Kirby, b. 1656, remarried for the 3rd time to Mary Plumb on
October 17, 1704 and had 3 more children, one of which was named Joseph,
b. May 14, 1705.  That's 3 Josephs in 2 generations.  I don't have the
death date of Joseph, b. 1695.  It is possible he died in infancy and
that's why his father named another child Joseph.

Hi Betti,

ok I'm a rookie with only two years research behind me.  How many in front?

I made it to CT State Library but would you believe that two of the photostat books were
out being rebound?  Typical for my research.  These are typed indexes for Barbour
Collection.  To look at orginals you have to request them and they only retrieve them
twice a day.  This is after security approves you to look at them and you receive a
special ID.

I did make a feww copies but of course it dos not make sense to me now without the
Kirby's of New England in front of me.  I'm not sure if all of this is from our common
line but....

England Kirbys

I have been searching the Bishops Transcripts (Baptisms, Marriages and Burials) for Sileby, Leicester, England with a fine tooth comb looking for my Sarson and Orme ancestors.  I have run on to several Kirby names on this film.  So far as I know my Kirbys are not from this area, but apparently someones are.  Since this is not a real common name in this parish someone might have a difficult time finding them unless they specifically knew they were from this parish.  If there is an interest,

I had given up hearing from you when everything I sent was returned as undeliverable.   I do have birth, death, marriage information on Thomas Hale and Joan Kirby and information on their 9 children.

I also have marriage and death information on Joan Kirby's parents John Kirby and Joan Cranfield and information about Joan's seven siblings.

I also have marriage information about Joan's second marriage to John Bides.

We may both have the same information.  I don't have anything further back on either the Kirby or the Cranfield lines, but I have not been actively looking for this information.  Since I know someone else is also looking, I will start looking for further information when I am at
the FHC library.

The information I have comes from family records handed down and I have not done original research to confirm and document.

My grandfather Leslie Kirby was born in Hampton Court England in the late
1890's I think.  I do not know anything about his siblings because he never
spoke of or to them.  He married my grandmother Eva Marriot.  They lived in
Toronto Ontario Canada for most of their life.

I seem to have got stuck with my Kirby Research.  The following is all I
have.

My grandfather Frederick William was born in 1904 in Paddington, London,
England  to a Frederick and Jane (nee Colwell).  He married a Lily Lena
Smith in Ilford, Essex, England in1938.

Frederick married Jane in 1901 with his father also named Frederick and a
Horsekeeper by trade deceased at time of wedding.  Frederick Junior is aged
24 when married so I searched the Birth Records around 1870 and 1880 but
cannot pinpoint which of the various Frederick's he could be.  I've checked
the Census Records for the Paddington area, where they were married, in 1891
in the hopes that either of them were there.  I also checked the Kensington
area as this is where Jane Colwell was born but found it very awkward to
pinpoint the exact fiche to look at.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have searched for many years for info on the following man
whom I believe to be my 3rd GGFTR:

Joseph Kirby who died in Burin, Newoundland, Nov 11, 1838
        at the age of 75.

The Mormon IGI lists 3 Joseph Kirbys as follows:

        1.      Christened Shillington, Bedford, England, 23 Dec
                1763. Parents...Father, Joseph, Mother, Elizabeth.

        2.      Christened Water Statford, Buckingham, England,
                9 Oct 1763. Parents...Father, Richard, Mother
                Elizabeth.

        3.      Christened Morston in Marsh, Gloucester, England,
                16 Oct 1763. Parents...Father, Joseph, Mother, Ann.

Suspect that Joseph was born in England...went to Ireland
at some later time and from there to Newfoundland.

I should appreciate any information that might help me to
        learn more about this man.

        Thank you,
        Joe oldjoe@sympatico.ca

Searching for any information on my gt gt gt grandfather Robert Benjamin
Kirby (son of Robert Kirby and Beatten) who was born in Southwark in 1815
and married a Sally Jay in 1838. Sally (daughter of Robert Jay and Amy) was
previously married to Luer Heinrich Gerdes with whom she had three children
-
Catherine Fanny Gerdes b1830
Luer Heinrich Gerdes b 1832 (later changed his name to Louis Henry Gerdes)
Henrietta Gerdes b 1835

In October 1838 Sally Gerdes (Jay) married Robert Benjamin Kirby. They
lived around Battersea where Robert Benjamin worked as a blacksmith. Their
first child, Beatten Susannah was born in Lowestoft in 1840, but it seems
they soon returned to London (8 Vauxhall St, Lambeth) where their next
three children were born:

Robert Jay Kirby b 1842 in New Street, Battersea Fields
Mary Ann Louisa Kirby b1845 in St Pancras
William Benjamin Kirby b1846 in Lambeth

In 30 October 1847 all four children were baptised in Battersea and the
family left for India (Robert Benjamin's occupation in India is registered
as boilermaker in 1849 on his son's death certificate).

My g-g grandmother, Beatten Susannah Kirby married Abraham Charles Arnell
(of Sweden) in 1856 in Byculla, Bombay, when she was 16 years old. They had
five children before she was widowed in May 1868.

Robert Jay Kirby married Elizabeth A Craig in 1862 in Bombay and had a
daughter, Sarah Elizabeth the following year. She died of dysentry aged 20
months. Robert Jay Kirby was employed as an engineer with Elphinstone Land
& Press Co. Bombay and died in 1903. William Benjamin Kirby died in Bombay
on 30 September 1849, aged 3 years. Nothing more is known about Mary Ann
Louisa Kirby.

Any information on the three GERDES children - did they also go to India
with the rest of the family? - and further details on Robert Benjamin
Kirby's/Sally Jay's ancestors and any siblings of theirs would be much
appreciated.

Kind regards.
